I couldn't have asked for a more perfect weekend.
On Saturday, we spent the late morning and early afternoon at Upton Hill Water Park. This fantastic regional park in Arlington has three pools (one infant/toddler, one lap and one mixed use), a splash ground and two waterslides. It also has batting cages and miniature golf, though we only stayed in the pool area. Between the splash ground, the kiddie pool and the main pool, we stayed busy for a good three hours. In fact, as exhausted as they were, the boys did not want to leave. But we know there is a fine line between their tired, good moods and major, uncontrollable meltdowns. So, by mid-afternoon, we left, very tan and very tired.
After rallying, we walked over to our friends' place across the street. January and Jeff invited us over for a picnic dinner in their condo building's backyard. We had a delicious meal of pesto pasta salad, Waldorf salad, watermelon, brownies and cantaloupe juice, all prepared by January. While the adults ate, the boys ran around in the grass and played Kornhole and bocci. Although the bugs were out to get all of us, we had a great time, eating and catching up.
On Sunday morning, we went to Luray Caverns with our friends Stephanie and Byron, and their son Evan, who is just a few months older than Henry and Drew. We were warned that this place was going to be cheesy, but we had a great time. It was hot and humid out, so the 54 degree temperature of the caverns was a nice relief. The only downside was that Jeff had to carry our double jogging stroller up and down several flights of stairs. But it was worth it. The caverns were spectacular and all the little boys enjoyed the stalactite and stalagmite formations and secret passageways. We were thankful that we decided to go early, because when we emerged from the caverns, the line to get in stretched all the way past the parking lot. We had only waited about 15 minutes, but the last person in line had more than an hour and a half wait. We only know this because the end of the line was near the outdoor garden maze, which we walked through after lunch. At that point, it was unbearably hot (for me, at least), so all I wanted to do was stand in front of the misters. Again, all the boys had fun and that's what mattered the most.
On our two-hour drive home, the boys and I napped in the car. We then headed to Tysons Corner for a quick errand. Afterward, we met up with Karen, Howard and Nate at Cheesecake Factory in Clarendon for dinner. While we were there, a strong thunderstorm moved through the area, knocking out power in the restaurant for a brief moment or two. It was like a hurricane was passing through. But it didn't affect us and we were able to catch up and enjoy the food and the company. By the time we got home, we were all really exhausted, but that didn't stop us from making plans for the Fourth of July.
Jeff was the superstar of Monday. He woke up early with the boys and had breakfast with them. He then took them to Turtle Park while I got to stay in bed and watch SoapNet (One Tree Hill marathon, anyone?). When they got home, the boys were nice and tired so we let them nap for as long as possible since they would be up late to watch the fireworks. Around 6pm, we headed over to the Georgetown waterfront and set up camp. For three hours, we ate, drank, played, people-watched and walked around. Around 9, the fireworks started and as usual, they were amazing. And Henry and Drew LOVED them.
By the time we got home, it was almost 11. I cannot tell you how exhausted I was. Even my fingers were tired. But I went to bed knowing it was worth it. We spent three fabulous days with the boys and good friends. I hope everyone had as great a weekend as we did!
Pics to come...
